    Iberostar Tucan Review April, 2007

    April 29th, 2007

This was our second visit to the Tucan/Quetzal and the 1st for putting on a wedding. We have been to several Iberostars but I am kind of partial to the Tucan as it has the best beach and jungle. There is so much wild life wandering around too. We saw the many birds Quetzals, Peacocks, Flamingos, Tucans, Parrots and even the wild chickens and the other birds like the Pelicans etc. There were Capi-Berras all over. They are like a rat crossed with a rabbit and can be very big in S. America. They just eat vegetation and are shy. We also saw the Monkeys on the days they came through the resort. They are wild but bold. The males are quite protective of the babies. Some are pretty big. I even saw a Scorpion on the walkway one night and he was big. No one laughs now that I keep a towel under the door at night in the hot countries! Had a couple of geckos in the room. We were on the ground floor though. Not many mosquitos as the resort really keeps things under control. Just don’t walk in the grass especially in bare feet in the jungle areas. The ponds and the cenote in the resort are awesome. They have left it as natural as possible.
The rooms are a very good size and very clean. The frdge is stocked with beer, water and pop.
The pool is big and warm this time of year. There is also an activities pool and a separate bar pool. There is a kid’s pool too. The ocean water is warm now too. We did our snorkling at Xel-Ha which is my fav. You can snorkle off the beach and see some fish.
The entertainment was great. They also bring in a troup of Spanish dancers once every 2 weeks and they do the knife and fire dancing. These are the best Spanish dancers I have ever seen. The dancers at the resort are great too. I see Roberto who was there dancing 6 yrs. ago is the boss and choreographer now. He is top notch.
There are 2 large buffets and 5 al a carte restaurants. The buffets and the outdoor ones are not air-conditioned. There were lots of fans and the outdoor ones are on the water and very cool. I never felt uncomfortable at all and liked the outdoor feel. You can have breakfast right beside the turtle pond and watch them and the birds and fish. There is a Cenote (underground river sink hole) at one buffet with a waterfall and many birds to see. You really feel in the jungle at this resort. The restaurants are Mexican, Italian, Japanese, Tropical and Steakhouse. We ate at all except the Steakhouse this time. I really enjoyed the Tropical on the Beach the best.
There are many bars, and shops in the lobbies and the lobby bars have entertainment at night. We had the guitar player for the wedding. He was excellent and knows tons of songs.
The wedding went off without a hitch. The wedding staff were great. There wasn’t a thing I would change. I am also glad we had it in the Jungle Terrace as it is set up like the Mayan ruins and has a platform for chairs and stairs for group pictures and the guitar player was up there. They bring the Bride and her Father up the back and you don’t see them until they hit the red carpet. The flowers were beautiful. We had the Casa Blanca Lillies as the main one with pink roses. We went nuts with the flowers as they are so much cheaper down there, so no worries. The Bride and Groom were totally surprised as their room had been decorated with all the flowers and swans etc. for the wedding night. I hear it smelt unreal. We even had the petals etc. one night in our room on the bed and all done up? Maybe they thought the old ones needed a night too. Most nights there were the towel animals and flowers in the curtains etc. As return guests we got the usual fruit basket and T-Shirts. We were treated royally and they put all the rooms in great buildings. Everyone was happy. The photographers did a lot of beach pics too. Foto Caribbean did a great job for us.
The beach was just as nice as I remember 6 yrs ago. Big and white soft sand and no rocks.
I would say that things are even better since I was there last time. The prices for the wedding were very reasonable too. No complaints at all.
I would recommend this resort for all ages. They have a great kids club too.
I probably didn’t cover everything so please ask if you want to know something specific. Playa Del Carmen is within walking distance. If you aren’t used to the heat I would recommend the cab. It is only $5. There is also a beautiful Bird Sanctuary just out the gates of Playacar(the community the Tucan is in) in Playa Del Carmen. Also in Playacar just a few blocks towards PDC there is a small mall and park with some ruins in it.
This time we went to Xel-Ha, Coba ruins and the Mayan Village and of course Playa Del Carmen a few times. My husband, son-in-law and daughter went on the Pirate ship that has the Dinner cruise and the battle with the other ship. Playa Del Carmen has grown a lot. The cruise left from Cancun though. Cancun city is a lot further than where the airport is.
Hope this helps let you know what it is like there. Happy travels.
The only bad part was that Skyservice Airline. I would take Air Transat way over that one. We had no choice this time of year though. There is more choice after the end of April I hear. I posted a couple of pics but had some trouble with the reduction taking so long. If you want to see something specific send me your e-mail address and I will shoot some to you.

We just got back from the Del Mar early this month and absolutely loved the entire vacation.  My wife and sons ( aged 6 and 10 ) had a fantastic time from start to finish.  It was an asset that the weather was perfect every day, but even without that, it would have been great.
